Courage is the attitude of facing and dealing with anything recognised as dangerous, difficult, or painful, instead of withdrawing from it; the quality of being fearless or brave; having valour.
Courage can also be about trying new things, even we’re scared to do so. Beginning Samurai Karate Australia training takes courage. It can be quite unnerving to begin a new venture like Martial Arts. By coming into the training hall and starting as white belt can be well outside many people’s comfort zone. Just doing this already displays courage.
Courage is then continually built on with each Samurai Karate Australia class. We teach students to be brave by pushing them through their limits and aiming to progress in every session. We teach our students that being courageous requires intelligence, that it’s not about putting themselves in harm’s way or making rash decisions to prove they are fearless and courageous. We teach them not to act on impulses but to practise discipline. We highlight the importance of having values and morals and to exercise courage in a responsible manner.
Essentially, at Samurai Karate Australia, we believe in knowing the difference between right and wrong is not always enough. We teach our students the importances of having the courage to do the right thing.
We emphasise to new students that every black belt at Samurai Karate Australia started out as a white belt. They all began as white belts who showed courage and never gave up. We help students push through difficulties, progress and improve at their own pace. As new students learn their first steps as white belts, we help them develop courage and the capability to confront challenges.
Building courage is very empowering for students and it strengthens their ability to face fears. It’s a critical skill set that everyone needs to develop in order to be successful in all aspects of life. Each student is encouraged to improve their skills, learn new things and reach for goals they thought were well beyond their capabilities.
